The "Tripod of Life" on which good health depends includes nutrition, physical activity and the role of the mind. A healthy diet includes a variety of foods in adequate quantities. Based on the main functions of food, they can be categorized in three groups.
  1. Energy Giving Foods are Foods containing carbohydrates and fats. A healthy diet is high in complex carbohydrates (whole cereals, whole pulses, starchy vegetables and fruits like banana, mango) and low in simple carbohydrates (sugar, jaggery). Fats and oils are concentrated sources of energy.
  2. Body Building Foods are protein rich foods like milk, meat fish, poultry eggs, pulses and nuts. They promote growth and development.
  3. Protective foods are rich in minerals and vitamins. Fruits and vegetables, particularly green leafy, yellow and orange colored, are rich in protective nutrients and antioxidants. They protect the body from infections and strengthen the immune system.

Care should be taken to include one or more foodstuffs from each of the three food groups in everymeal. Water, through not considered a food is a very important constituent of a nutrious diet.
